Stern's Music 1994

Sam Mangwana, a star vocalist with Congo's greatest big bands, re-recorded this classic selection of songs from his celebrated career in 1993. Includes the massive rumba
hit, Suzana. Sam Mangwana will certainly enter the pantheon of soukous’ greatest vocalists, which already honors Tabu Ley Rochereau and Franco. But unlike his mentors, he embraced a soukous style that imbibed the gentle, rollicking rumba rhythms of the Caribbean (especially Cuba). Perhaps, his affinity for Angolan music and its Portugese inflections also caused Mangwana to embrace European and New World influences. Unlike his soukous predecessors, his arrangements tend toward a softer, more acoustic and less electronic sound. Born in Kinshasa in 1945 of Angolan parents, his father was a shopkeeper and his mother sang at a social club for Angolan women. He attended a boarding school run by Salvation Army missionaries and sang in the school’s choir. Almost by accident, he met Tabu Ley on the street one day and before long he joined Tabu Ley’s Africa Fiesta. After singing with Tabu Ley for ten years, he branched out and performed with Franco and other prominent Kinshasa bands. In the 1970s, he moved to the Ivory Coast and teamed up with the musicians who later went on to form another seminal African ensemble, Les Quatres Etoiles. Because of his musical “wanderings,” he is known as La Pigeon Voyageur. |

I just heard this track recently and I cant stop listening to it. It has one of the best bass lines ever along with Ringo’s excellent drumming. Apparently this was a b-side to “Paperback Writer” but it wouldnt have felt out of place if it was included on the “Revolver” album.

Mahogany Rush: Mick Layne (guitar); Peter Dowse (bass); Josh Trager
(drums)and Frank Marino (guitar, vocals)
Album recorded LIVE in Montreal (Club Soda) during the "Eye Of The Storm" Tour (2001)
He is mentioned in the same breath as Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana and other extraordinary guitarists. He is said to be one of the greatest guitarists ever. His name is Frank Marino; Born in Montreal on November 20th 1954. An excellent self-taught drummer prior to his 10th birthday. Picked up the guitar for the first time at the age of 13 while in hospital as a means of therapy (circa 1968). Upon his discharge from hospital Frank began “jamming” with various musicians in and around Montreal using a name that Frank had chosen; Mahogany Rush, which was more an allusion to an experience than a musical group. By 1971, Frank’s now famed Mahogany Rush was making a name for itself outside of the Montreal area, in fact the band began to have a following throughout the United States and beyond. The group became the first Canadian “hard rock trio”, blazing the path for groups like RUSH and Triumph that followed. The group became one of the first Canadian bands to break into the U.S. market, where they continue to have a huge following. They were also one of the first to achieve International stardom, playing to huge crowds in Japan, Germany, England, Sweden and across the globe. In late 1971, at the age of 16, just prior to his 17th birthday, Marino began recording his 1st album, “MAXOOM”, on KoTai Records (a local label headed by Robert Nickford). Marino began showing signs of being a prolific songwriter and producer, constantly coming up with new ideas and ways to present them musically. Albums number 2 and 3 were done for the 20th Century Fox Label. Marino’s brainchild quickly grew a devoted fan following and would regularly play to sold out crowds. By the time he signed with Columbia Records (and released his 4th album, his 1st for Columbia) the band had already grown too popular for smaller venues and was playing to sold-out arenas and stadiums throughout North America. Playing to 20,000 plus fans was the norm. Interestingly, the band had a larger fan base outside of Canada than within. Frank Marino was regularly flooring fans throughout the USA with his guitar prowess. The record deal with Columbia saw a total of 7 albums released (albums # 4 through 10 for the band). By the 2nd Columbia album, “World Anthem” the group had, at the request of the label and Manager (Davis Krebs) altered its name to Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush due to Frank’s growing reputation as one of rock’s greatest guitarists. 1978 would see the band playing for more than an hour to over 330,000 fans at California Jam 2. Like The Grateful Dead and Canadian bands like The Wackers, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush proved to be even more successful as a live act than they were on any of their numerous LPs. After Columbia Records, Marino went on to release album numbers 11, 12 and 13 between 1988 and 1996. The lineup had changed a few times over the years, but the band never seemed to miss a beat. Frank Marino also released two albums without using the Mahogany Rush moniker in 1986 and 1990 respectively. Frank became a world renowned and respected guitarist with regular television appearances on shows like Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, The Midnight Special, and The Pop (Japan TV). 2001 finally sees the release of “EYE OF THE STORM”, MARINO’s 16th album. Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush began their triumphant return to the stage when they played to a sold out crowd at The Spectrum in Montreal Canada on Friday June 2nd, 2000. /RecordCompany

"Knights of the Blues Table" is truly a labor
of love. Originally conceived as a tribute to the "Godfathers of British Blues," Cyril Davies and Alexis Korner, the album ended up as a more general celebration of the genre's origins and
rich history. The record includes uniformly great performances from members of virtually every important blues-influenced British rock group, including Humble Pie, Cream, Fleetwood Mac, Savoy
Brown, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, the Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann, and scores of others. The disc is a rock family-tree lover's dream, as it reveals the incestuous nature of the scene.
What makes "Knights of the Blues Table" truly stand apart from other tribute records, though, is the obvious love and enthusiasm apparent in every performance. There are so many highlights
it's hard to pick just a few, but obvious treats include great harmonica work from Mick Jagger on Lonnie Johnson's "Racketeer Blues" (with brother Chris Jagger on vocals), a rare vocal
performance by Cream lyricist Pete Brown on Leroy Carr's "Rocks in My Head," an absolutely blistering take on "Blind Man" by ex-Stone the Crows vocalist Maggie Bell, and a sandpaper-voiced
version of Robert Johnson's "Traveling Riverside Blues" by the legendarily reclusive and rarely recorded Peter Green. To top it all off, the album also includes a 1954 home recording of "KC
Moan" performed by Cyril Davies himself. In short, Knights of the Blues Table is a recording of extreme historical and cultural importance, a must-have treasure trove for lovers of British
blues. CD was released in 1997 on Viceroy/Lightyear and features 15 tracks.2. If You Live - Georgie Fame

Home is a 2009 documentary by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. The film is almost entirely
composed of aerial shots of various places on Earth. It shows the diversity of life on Earth and how humanity is threatening the ecological balance of the planet. The aerial shots are really stunning and the music is simply brilliant! And, of course, the message is clear! Everyone must watch this documentary!
The film can be watched for free in its entirety on YouTube. It has no copyright; it can be downloaded, distributed, copied, uploaded without restrictions.

An actrice slash singer who looks like a burlesque-dancer , who sounds like one too, who sang with an electro-legend, who covered Plastic Betrand and who now made a more folky popalbum. Meet Annie Dufresne from Quebec (happy holidays, Canadian readers!). She's new to me, but she did quite some acting , and made four solo-albums. She worked with Electro Lise , see a video here . Rapping isn't her forte, I'd say. She also sang with Trans-X , the legendary electropopband best known for this song . Melodie pour coeur brisé is the titletrack of her latest album, that features more hushed tones, less electronica and more fragility. Just the way we like it.

The music group Dynamoe appears
to be quietly but steadily doing the free and legal thing for awhile now. They have three full albums with the earliest going back to 2001, and two compilations of unreleased materials. I
figured it is time to give these guys their due. They have a solid professional sound that ranges from electronica to trip-hop to soul jazz and are deserving of a bigger audience.
The interesting thing to me is how each album has a distinct sound. Jump Start is from 2001 and is clearly a electronic music album clearly in the Techno / House tradition. It is purely instrumental, heavily percussive, and sounds like it should be played onthe dance floor. Not my cup of tea but good for what it is.
Coming Home is from 2004 and more to my taste. The opening track”Absent” is out of the acid jazz/jazz fusion arena and features a soulful vocal and great Richard “Groove” Holmes styled organ. Most of the album stays in the groove with jazzy solos and urban beats. “Geneve” is an especially tasty instrumental with a good sax solo and some nice arranging. “Mistress of Spice” has a nice female vocal paired with a slow-tempo blend of soul and trip-hop. The entire album sets off a calming but groove-filled atmosphere. This is the one I would recommend most.
In the Wake of Time is the latest and was released in 2007. The band has now shifted to a more commercial sound of smooth jazz and trip-hop. Vocals are now in the forefront giving a decidely mainstream feel. Yet there is still a tight interaction with the band members. and good arrangements throughout. “You Convinced Me” has a Tricky influence while “Rita Come Here Quick” is a track ready for prime time. This is a good album for easy listening; not as good as Coming Home but more my type than Jump Start
Rounding up the pack are two compilation albums of unreleased materials from 1998-2000 and 2001-2003. Mainly electronic dance music, the first collection does have some really funky tracks. I especially like “Chinese Food” and “Yellow Cab”. The second collection has a lot of soul and jazz oriented materials such as the trumpet sampled “If it Twinkles Snatch it”. Like most collections of unreleased material there is an unevenness but still plenty of good tracks.
All albums are available from Dynamoe’s web site in either 128kbps or 192kbps MP3 format. If you enjoy the music, be sure to support the band by sending them a donation.

* A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE PAST, THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE.
The symphony was commissioned and conceived as a millennium celebration work for the Salzburg Festival. My plan has been for the symphony to represent a broad spectrum of many of the world's great "wisdom" traditions. Working together with the Very Reverend James Parks Morton of the Interfaith Center of New York and Professor Kusumita P. Pedersen of St. Francis College, we synthesized a vocal text that begins before the world's creation, passes through earthly life and paradise, and closes with a future dedication. We are looking at the moment of the millennium as a bridge between the past (represented by the "Requiem" and embodying the first nine movements up to the moment of Death), the present (the "Bardo" representing the "in-between") and culminating in "Nirmanakaya" (the future manifestation of enlightened activity). We have elected to present the original texts (Greek, Hebrew, Sanskrit, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and indigenous languages) in one language, English, to show the commonalties with which all these traditions resonate. For a work of this scale it seemed fitting to add chorus, children's choir and soloists to the usual symphonic ensemble, thereby giving it ample breadth and dramatic capability. Besides being a compendium of reflection on the process of global transformation and evolution, it is hoped that the work will serve as a strong and positive celebration of the millennium year.

Cameron Stallones continues his swampy journey to the heart of the sun, melting a plastic sheet of psychedelia over the beach and pulling the heart of the African jungle up to the seashore. Throbbing with a beleaguered stomp and still flailing some wah into the skanking heart of dub, Cameron proves that pulse slowing vibes are the cure for pretty much anything. Heavy Deeds opens with a little dub-funk with swayed vocals that show edges of his Vibes project bleeding back into SA but the two share enough common ground that I'd be hard pressed to tell who's influencing who these days. The guitar crust of his early days ekes its way back into the fold on this release more than it has on any of his records since The Phynx but its a tempered burn that meshes itself well into the chest rattling pulse of spring-reverbed synth that swells at the core of the record. Now if you pinned me down I'd have to admit that I'm a sucker for pretty much everything that Stallones and co. do, but bias aside this stands as a rather essential release for the oncoming swelter of summer.
